I'm still here; still a grandmother but we added Olivia in 2015 for a total of 4 granddaughter; still teaching but at a new smaller school in 4th grade; still crafting but in a new house we built in 2015; bought and sold cars; traveled more often; added a dog to our routine; and dealt with a crashing 80ft tree into the middle of our 3 month old house. Along the way, I lived, laughed, and celebrated, and sometimes mourned. My blog faded as a center piece of my life. Now, however, I wonder if it's a good place to write down thoughts of my life journey. Political climate suggests something more private than the overwhelming presence of FaceBook or Twitter might be a nice place to document and store my thoughts. Fours years of tech improvement and life changes and I'm sure more will come. For those of you subscribed, you're welcome to stay. I can't promise this will be a craft blog or just a personal place to think, but you are welcome to Maryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03335238693341524943noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6771806426442300153.post-79735115937247349012014-08-08T14:02:00.001-07:002014-08-08T14:02:59.957-07:00New, New, New!!!New papers, colors, crafting supplies are always tons of fun! Close to My Heart released their a new Annual Inspirations at their convention last month. Love the new stamps, papers, kits, markers, and more, but mostly, I just like the new ideas! Here are a few cards I did with the new markers. Very cool ShinHan Twin Touch markers! So creamy, smooth, rich, and blendable!
So, for my sister's birthday tomorrow, I quickly made one from Close to My Heart's Jubilee paper pack. I can officially say I've actually used every paper pack that Close to My Heart carried from July 2103 to July 2014! Now time to clean out the studio and make room for new papers, colors, inks, embellishments, and more.
I love 9X9 accordion albums but Close to My Heart no longer makes them and my stash was depleted a year ago. Have no fear!!! I covered chipboard ends and spliced cardstock for the accordion fold. Used LOTS of stuff but mostly: Gypsy, Smokey Plum, White Daisy, any thing silver and glittery, and random stamps that fit the mood of Ivy Lane.
What a way to travel around the globe! I thought the Balloon Ride papers would be difficult to use but I was surprised to find how easy and flexible Close to My Heart's colors and design choices work together. I created two cards, each using a different stamp set but still focused on one central image. Amazing how different each card looks.
If you can here from Trisha's Blog, you're on the Paper Trail Blog Hop! I whipped up this cute card for a friend who is retiring this year. Can't believe I have friends retiring now, just like I couldn't believe the babies where growing up to adults. LOL
It also helped that CTMH also posted some very inspirational artwork using the stamp. I used paper scraps from Lollydoodle and Arianna paper packs and quickly (30 minutes!!!) whipped out these easy cards. The Loolydoodle cards are almost copied from the CTMH artwork and so you'll see similarities. Kind of nice to have some of the guess work figured out but they also inspired me as I started seeing possibilities with the stamp set to spur me on to the Arianna scraps. Enjoy the quick artwork and as always, if you have questions, just shoot me a message. :)
If you're coming from Connie's blog you're headed down a great path and some beautiful artwork. I started a new scrapbook (album) a couple of months ago and needed a one page introductory page. I love using one main for 2-3 smaller photos for the first page of my albums. Last month, my mom came to visit and we took her to breakfast. It was a great opportunity to capture her smile and with my title, I had a nice first one page layout.
March is a busy month in our family for birthdays. Yesterday was my brother's 55th, which we celebrated with family and his closest friends at a great little Italian restaurant over near the University of Washington. Yummmy food, good conversation, and generally a nice relaxing time by all. He was surprised to see such a great group gathered to honor him. :)

Here are the card I made, both inspired by Pinterest (I seriously do not know what I would do without Pinterest!)
What a fun paper feature for the Paper Trail blog hop: Skylark. If you cam here from Amy's blog, Welcome! The Paper Trail is small circular blog hope and we hope you will enjoy circling our artwork I was inspired by cruising Pinterest and the Close To My Heart how to Make it From Your Heart Vol. II book. While I am a huge fan of vintage themed papers and Skylark screams vintage to me, it is also very versatile. The two cards I created as so different! Shoot me any questions or comments and then hop over to Linda's blog to continue on down the trail.

One masculine and one feminine. The feminine one was an open design of flowers in the shape of a heart wreath. It's been so long since I colored anything and it felt good to get out the colored pencils. The masculine card was actually a fast and easy. The fast and easy is so satisfying, thanks to Close to My Heart!
It's a richly colored theme that includes pinks, purples, and greens accented by a soft natural beige. While Close to My Heart created a romantic feel for the paper with the artwork featured in the idea book, I noticed turquoise being worn in the photos and decided to highlight the bright color using lagoon on the layout. I have to beg forgiveness on the photos!!!! I used Flip Flaps to expand the page but what a challenge to get a photo of the whole layout both opened and closed. I have such a new appreciation for the photo rooms and expensive cameras, now. (OK, and I have to admit that while I have patience for scrapping and teaching, I don't have it for photography...LOL) Any hoot, you'll get an idea of the possibilities using Flip Flaps to add more photos to a layout, the idea of using photos to tell a story, and the ease of adding additional colors to a paper pack. Then, to get inspired more for Ivy Lane, hop on over to Betsy's blog to see how she used these wonderful colors and patterns.
Here is my sweetie's birthday card I created one morning before running off to work, literally. These cards were done in less than an hour from walking up the stairs to the studio to taking the photos. Only thing I left for later in the day was the decision which card to use. I couldn't decide which background I liked better. I used washi tape over white cardstock for two panels one card. Then I tried dry embossing and stamping the panels of the other card. Which one do you think I chose?
If you came from Linda's blog, you already know why I'm so excited! The rich colors and trendy/retro designs are to die for! I made two birthday cards this week with the paper for a friend and my mom. After getting inspired from these cards, hop along the trail to Karen's blog!
If you have arrived here from Betsy's blog, you are on the Paper Trail Blog Hop. This month we are featuring the lovely, cool Frosted from Close to My Heart. The paper combines cool blues and greys with the softness of off white. I used the pattern/layout, colors, and ideas featured in the Workshop on the Go paper pack and then added Ponderosa Pine to give the layout a more nature look and less Christmassy feel. I loved how you can use the layout included in the kit as an inspiration to jump into your own ideas. Continue to "hop" along the trail and head over to Tracey's Blog for more Frosted creativeness!
If you hop through the Paper Trail Blog, you'll see lots to inspire you using this versatile paper. If you're coming from Amy's blog, you have already seen some beautiful artwork. I don't know of anyone having a baby in the next month or so but I do have lots of birthdays coming so I decided to create two birthday cards. One combines and coordinates with Laughing Lola. Who'd have thought that!?!? The other I used washi tape to make the ruffle along the punch balloons. Both cards were from Make it From Your Heart, Vol 2, by Close to My Heart.
We are welcoming Darly to our little hop this month. I managed to get my card done in about 20 minutes so it's very quick. Tracey's challenge was to use the Originals pattern called To the Point. I rotated my card to show versatility as well a highlighted the You are My Happy September special from Close to My Heart. The special is actually three stamp sets in one: cute alphabet, seasonal images, and great quotes.
If you are hopping from Karen, you already know about the rich, autumn tones used in this paper pack. My intention was to do something non "Fall" with these beautiful papers but alas, they compelled me to look over my family Thanksgiving albums. While these photos are not the wonderful quality of our now professional family photographers, they are dear to my heart and speak of our traditional family gatherings and fit in albums I'm building. (Yeah, albums.........I have six albums with over 30 double sided layouts and have started Number seven. I don't scrap in order and I only start a new book when the books get too heavy to lift. I never worry about archival quality products or thickness of my layouts. I just record the moments, people, and love.) So, back to 2009 Thanksgiving. My family traditionally gathers every Thanksgiving and have typically have five to 32 for dinner. The more the merrier. Kids go off to college, babies are born, people are married, cousin come into town, there are dueling turkeys, different venues, different themes, dozens of pies, and always family love. So this is 2009, amateur photos and all. If you want to be inspired by more, follow the trail to Connie's blog.
Michael and I made an amazing bruschetta, not your traditional bruschette, either: shrimp, avocado, olives, capers, garlic, Italian parsley. It was amazing. Of course, by the time I decided to post this recipe here, the bruschette was gone.............an indication of how good it was. I am hoping to make more later this week and I'll take photos when I do, promise. If you want to try it out yourself, before then (I plan on making this again for our staff luncheon on Thursday) have at it:

(This a modified version of what Romano's Macaroni Grill served this summer)
Makes one serving
Ingredients:
2 tblsp Italian Olives (copped fine) - get these in the deli department, mine were labeled Scilian Olives
1 tblsp Capers (chopped fine)
1/2 Avocado (diced)
1 tblsp Fresh Italian Parsley (chopped fin)
4 tblsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil (divided)
1/4 lbs Salad Shrimp (pre-cooked) - from the deli or seafood department, they are so cute!
4 slices of Crusty Italian Break
1 tblsp Red Onion (chopped fine)
1 tblsp Roasted Garlic (chopped fine)
1 can Cannellini Beans (drained and rinsed)
1/2 cup Roma Tomatoes (diced)
2 Tblsp Lemon Juice
Lemon Wedge (for garnish)

Preheat oven to 350, brush both sides of bread slices with olive oil, place on a sheet pan and toast in oven about 5 minutes until they are golden brown.

Chop all other ingredients and combine into a bowl. Lightly toss and allow mixture to chill and flavors to marry in refrigerator for at least 20 minutes. Taste and correct for salt and pepper. Layer mixture onto toasted bread slices and garnish with lemon wedges.

Notes: While it seems there is a lot of chopping, I did like having things finely chopped so you can get so much on small slices of bread. You could use smaller white beans such as Great Northern or Navy Beans; essentially any white bean. Cannellini Beans are the largest of the three basic white beans but use them interchangeably.

If you try this, I'd love to hear if you had as wonderful an experience we we did!

I am our family historian and you can see lots of the old heritage photos I've scrapped. I scrap current things but my emphasis is on recording the important family members, events, and traditions. Of course, being the historian lets me determine what events are important enough to scrap. A photographer I'm not. LOL But, we have a bunch of photographers in several generations who have spent their time and money on that hobby. I spend my time and money on documenting, which to me is more than just the photo.

You know all that, right?

What leads me to today's post? In May, my dad died. While his death was not unexpected and mostly a relief since his last years were so hard, it still gives those of us closest to him reason to pause and reflect. Dad often expressed he did not care what happened to him once he died and he didn't really care about funerals or memorials. But Dad had 5 children, 10 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild as his legacy. So, we gathered as many of those three generations that are now spread from coast to coast in Onekama, Michigan for a family reunion. That little lakefront town was Dad's love. The houses he poured his heart and soul into are still there and lovely but that's another story.

Back to the reunion: the cameras came out, the friends came, the food came, and we celebrated the amazing life of my dad. As I growing up, I have to admit I didn't think my dad's life was so amazing but on July 26, Dad's pastor gave a heartwarming, honest reflection his life. Memorials can be so revealing. From the sermon, we went back to the rental house for these wonderful photos. These aren't the photos from our family photographers, just mine from my little point and shoot. That's OK. I'll get the good photos from my brother and nephew, some of our designated family photographers. Not everyone could be at the reunion. That's the way it will be from now on as the family grows and moves forward. This is a quick 9"X9" accordion album with current trendy embellishments, colors, style.

However, as trendy as this may be, it's meant to be a reflection and tribute to my dad. There are informal groups and formal groups of family members. Here's to the start of more family history.

If you have photos of loved ones, gather them. Document who the people are. Love the moments and pour yourself into the stories. They matter.
I gave them both family jewelry. While I deemed the gifts to be nice, how to present them in a very little amount of time? Fired up the Circut and came up with these:

I made them in about 1/2 hour total. Seriously. How great is Close to My Heart and Cricut? The answer is in the photos. They were well received, too! ")

Did you see how Betsy and Tracey interpreted this could card design? It was so fast and easy!!! I loved the fresh, eye catching focus circle. This design is from the Close to My Heart's Originals Card Confidence Program and is called Heart Tag. It's supposed to be a little 3"X4" card but that is only a suggestion, meant to spur creativity. Here's my creativity:
It's almost Halloween! Here are photos of "The Little Girls" from last year. Yeah, two aren't so little but ALL are darlingly cute. This is not your traditional Halloween layout but since the girls are getting older and more sophisticated in their costumes, Laughing Lola is perfect! I used lots of "bling", added Sky to the color mix, and cut the photo strip from Close To My Heart's Cricut Artiste cartridge. Don't you love the paisleys! Hop over to Betsy's blog for more inspiration!
